Judging a Book by It’s Cover
We hate to admit it, but even the most avid of readers is guilty of judging a book by its cover. Even for myself, if that book wasn’t recommended to me by someone I trust, then there is a three step check point that takes me from browsing to purchase. The first thing I notice in a book store is the cover, then the title, then the review on the inside flap.
A book’s cover, then,is supppper important. It has one purpose: to sell the book by intriguing the right readers. The essential elements of a front cover include title and author name. Optional elements include the subtitle (if there is one) and photos, background images or graphics.
I know this, but that doesn’t make choosing the perfect cover for my book any easier. In fact, these little facts just help to add more pressure to the independent writer/ publisher. So much so, when 6 potential covers for my upcoming release, Jerry Rides a Roller Coaster, landed on my desk this week i nearly had a panic attack.
How can i know which covers potential readers would enjoy most??
I don’t have a huge marketing team or big publishing company to guide these decisions. I began to shrink under the pressure of it all, and the little monster of doubt began to feed off of my worries.
Thats when i remembered, my secret weapon: a number of amazing supporters with great opinions who can help me.
Why? Because its entirely too much for one woman to decide on her own.
